When you're in Edit Mode and using Words Mode, you have the option to switch between Click to Select and Drag.
Click to Select
By default, you'll be using the Click to Select option when you switch to Words Mode.
While in this option, you can select individual words to be used for your future Smart Extract+ extraction.
In the case of this document, if I wanted to extract the Bill # and use the Invoice Number value of 1234 to be used, I can go to Words Mode and click the 1234 on the document. This will be populated in the Bill # field.
Drag
If the value you want to extract has been split up into different words, you can use Drag mode to select each of these.
To use Drag, select it in the top right of the Edit Mode screen.
Once you click Drag, visually within Panel 3, nothing will change. However, when you hover over the document, your cursor will change to a + indicating you can click to drag across the document.
In the example below, I want to extract the Bill Date, but in Words Mode, it has separated the Date into 3 different 'words' as there are spaces between them.
Here, I can click Drag, hover in the empty space to the left of the start of the field, here it is August. Then, I'll click to drag across the desired data to extract, to the end of the 2025 to the right. Once I stop clicking, the pop-over will appear and show the data I have selected.
Multiple Words/Sentences
Drag can be used to select multiple words, or even a full sentence, that has been extracted. You can use Drag to select a block of text, but be conscious this may not be the most reliable extraction as words can get jumbled when a new line starts.
Be aware of the character limits that exist on the fields you're entering into. Within Edit Mode, the data will appear as extracted, but when you move into Preview Data, you may see a reduced number of words/characters that have been extracted because of our character limits in place.
Why Can't I Drag Around The Words?
If you are new to using Drag, it can be difficult to know where to place your mouse, where to start clicking and where to end. It may take a few tries to get used to it and get the results you need.
You don't need to cover the whole field to extract it, sometimes it's easier to cover half of the field to extract it, like below.
This is especially useful when the fields are close together and it's fiddly to try and get only the field you want.
What's Next?
Once you've extracted your data, you will next go to the Preview Data page to review the extraction once calculations and validations are in place.
